Kandakadu Centre Clash: 202 Inmates Remanded

Polonnaruwa Acting Magistrate Nirmala C. Yatigammana on Monday ordered to remand 202 inmates of the Kandakadu Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre till November 17 who were arrested in connection with the tense situation that took place within the rehabilitation center on Sunday night. Accordingly, the security forces took steps to remand the suspects in the prisons in Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa.

The tense situation in the rehabilitation center occurred following a clash between two groups of inmates over a water bucket and 33 inmates were reported to have escaped during the incident.

The security forces also took steps to bring the other inmates who were involved in the clash to the Senapura Rehabilitation center and 20 out of them also had fled around 7 p.m. on Monday. Police together with the Sri Lanka Army managed to locate six of the escaped and search operations are underway to arrest the other 14 suspects,Welikanda Police said.

Security forces are also conducting operations to arrest 33 inmates who are at large, police said. Five individuals including four inmates of the center and an Army Soldier were rehabilitated following the clash and property of the center also have been severely damaged in the incident, the Commissioner General of Rehabilitation Maj. General Darshana Hettiarachchi said.

The tense situation was brought under control by the Sri Lanka Army and the Police Special Task Force in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Police.
