Description: Why is this painting entitled Josephine Baker?

Before the paint was even remotely dry and it was sitting on the easel, my wife and muse…and very talented artist in her own right, looked at it, looked at me and said, “Josephine Baker”.

My response that occurred in less than a millisecond was…”Brilliant, absolutely YES! I can see it in the work.”

As so often happens the paintings seem to name themselves. The scream their titles at us. We just have to be tuned in to hear them.

If you don’t know much about Josephine Baker, Google her. She and I have only two things in common…we are both Geminis & American. She was an American born French entertainer. She was actively involved in the French Resistance. She was the most celebrated performer to headline the reviews of the Folies Bergere in Paris. Her performance in the review Un Vent De Folie in 1927 caused a sensation in Paris. Her costume consisted of a girdle of bananas and became her most iconic image and symbol of the Jazz age.

Study this painting and see if you can tune into the Josephine Baker vibe.
