I work at a library, and Summer Reading is one of our biggest programs of the year! The goal is to keep kids (and adults!) interested in reading throughout the summer, especially when school has ended. Some kids need a steady stream of good books to prevent "summer slide," where they may lose their enthusiasm for and progress in reading. With classes being held virtually this spring, it's even more important that children not fall behind and are ready to tackle their studies in the fall.
With that in mind, I'll be featuring lots of books for kids, 'tweens and teens to encourage them to keep reading this summer. (Look for the banner above on each post.) I also encourage you to seek out your local library to see what Summer Reading programs are being held this summer, even if they're more virtual than usual. As for adults, make sure you set a good example for your young readers by being a reader, too! I've always got great recommendations on my other blog, Susan Heim on Writing, so be sure to check them out. Or ask a librarian what he or she is reading!
