Moratuwa police said young man who was heartbroken because his girlfriend did not accept his invitation to marry had set himself on fire and also tried to grab and hold his girlfriend in a bid to kill her as well.
However, the girl had been rescued by those who were nearby but the young man who ran away with his body in flames had been hit by a train and died.
The deceased has been identified as S.Mohandas (28) residing at Maskeliya. Both are residents of Maskeliya area and they had been having a love affair for sometime, police said.
Police said that the 23-year-old girl, who suffered burn injuries in the accident, was admitted to the emergency unit of the Colombo South Teaching Hospital.
The police said that the girl in question worked as a cashier at a store in Katubedda Moratuwa and the young man also worked at a nearby location in Moratuwa.
On the day of the incident, the young man had come to the shop where the young woman was working and had proposed to her. But the young woman had refused and the two had an argument.Then the young man had asked the store owner’s permission to go to the toilet.He had come out of the toilet with his body in flames and had tried to grab the woman and hold her.
People nearby had intervened and tried to put out the fire which had spread to engulf both of them. But the boy had run away towards the rail track where he was hit by the oncoming train.The girl has been admitted to the hospital with burn injuries.
