American comedian Jerry Seinfeld faced criticism during his appearance at Duke University’s graduation ceremony due to his vocal support for Israel amid the Gaza war. As Seinfeld took the stage, numerous pro-Palestinian students walked out in protest. Despite receiving an honorary doctorate and some applause during his speech, a significant portion of the audience left the venue upon his introduction by Vincent Price, the university president. Media reports indicate chants of “Free Palestine” during the event.
Videos from the ceremony depict students leaving their seats and exiting the venue after Seinfeld was called to the stage. Some students were observed carrying Palestinian flags despite being dressed in graduation attire.

While Seinfeld had both supporters and detractors in the audience, those in favor of him chanted his name upon his arrival. Another video captured supporters of Seinfeld booing at the departing students, prompting Seinfeld to humorously acknowledge the controversy by remarking, “A lot of you are thinking, ‘I can’t believe they invited this guy.’ Too late.”
During his speech, Seinfeld also addressed the concept of privilege, highlighting his own Jewish upbringing as a factor in his comedic success.
Interestingly, Seinfeld’s support for Israel dates back to the conflict with Hamas in October of the previous year. He visited Tel Aviv in December to meet with families affected by Hamas hostage situations, citing his Jewish heritage as a motivating factor for his involvement.
