Jason Urick – Whoever You Are

Portland’s Jason Urick continues to release unbelievably fascinating music. If you like electronic music with dense, discordant textures, then I can’t recommend his 2012 album I Love You enough. A few weeks ago, great Swedish cassette tape label Oma333 (who also released music by R Stevie Moore – see previous post) put out The Day – a tape Urick recorded right after I Love You. While I haven’t yet heard the whole thing, the drone-y tribal pulse of “Whoever You Are” is as hypnotic and suggestive as it gets. Urick’s music conveys a sense of mystery; In this case like traces of a ghostly ancient civilization echoing from the bottom of the sea.
