International Kite Day
-- Every year, Gujarat celebrates more than 200 festivals. The International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) is regarded as one of the biggest festivals celebrated. Months before the festival, homes in Gujarat begin to manufacture kites for the festival. The festival of Uttarayan marks the day when winter begins to turn into summer, according to the Indian calendar. It is the sign for farmers the sun is back and harvest season is approaching which is called Makara Sankranti. This day is considered to be one of the most important harvest days in India. Source

National Dress Up Your Pet Day

First Successful C-Section Performed/Caesarean Section Day (1794)
- Dr. Jesse Bennett, of Edom, VA, performed the first successful Cesarean section. He performed the Cesarean on his own wife at the birth of their only child on January 14, 1794.
Ratification Day (1784)
- Anniversary of the act officially ending the American Revolution and established the US as a sovereign power. On January 14, 1784, the Continental Congress, meeting at Annapolis, MD, ratified the Treaty of Paris, thus fulfilling the Declaration of Independence of July 4, 1776.
National Hot Pastrami Sandwich Day (1887)
- Although New York's Sussman Volk is generally credited with producing the first pastrami sandwich in 1887, the claim is disputed by the founders of Katz's Deli in New York, which was founded in 1888. Volk, a kosher butcher, claimed he got the recipe from a Romanian friend in exchange for storing the friend's luggage while the friend returned to Romania. According to his descendant, Patricia Volk, Volk prepared pastrami according to the recipe and served it on sandwiches out of his butcher shop. The sandwich was so popular Volk converted the butcher shop into a restaurant to sell pastrami sandwiches.
