Jaffna Bans Tuition on Fridays, Sundays for Grades 1 to 9

Jaffna District Secretary A. Sivabalasundaran has banned the conduct of private classes on Fridays  and Sundays for students from Grades 1 to 9 in Jaffna from July 1. This decision has been taken after a discussion by the District Secretary with the owners of private educational institutions, education authorities and social workers in the Jaffna district.

The District Secretary has said that if private classes are held on Fridays and Sundays for students above Grade nine, at least one subject in those classes should be taught about art, aesthetics and ethics in an additional 30 minutes period.

Apart from that, the Jaffna District Secretary has recommended that if private classes are held for students below Grade Nine in Jaffna on days other than Fridays and Sundays, the classes should be conducted in a manner subject to the following conditions.

They are; parent awareness sessions should be held at private educational institutions before classes begin, special education activities for students up to class 9 should be completely stopped on Sundays, educational institutions should be equipped with health facilities, classroom facilities and government buildings should not be used for private classes, It is mandatory to register educational institutions with the Local Government body, Divisional Secretariat, Private educational institutions should allocate 15 to 30 minutes to discuss spiritual and social issues and

Private educational institutions should form an association with the health department, the police department, religious representatives, child welfare officers, and the education department and monitor that these activities are done properly.
