What is ITP

ITP or Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura is a bleeding disorder. It is a rare problem, which is characterized by decreased platelets in the body. Platelets help in the formation of blood clot during any injury but in ITP patient, due to decreased platelet count the formation of blood clot does not occur which results in excessive bleeding and bruising. Bleeding can occur from the nose, gums, bladder, etc.

Clinical features for ITP - ITP patient can present with the following complaints

Bleeding - Bleeding can occur from the nose, gums and can also be seen in urine and stool. Women suffering from ITP can have prolonged periods.

Blotches and Bruises - Blotches are the marks which are not of regular shape and can be seen on the skin, while Bruises are the bluish-purple marks on our skin, after any injury. In ITP patient, blotches and bruises are seen anywhere along the skin.

Ayurvedic perspective of ITP

According to Ayurveda, the three energies form our body - Vata, Pitta and Kapha, when the imbalance occurs between any of them, the disease occurs. ITP is a Raktapittadisorder (Rakta - blood), which occurs due to increased pitta in our body. This aggravation of pitta dosha occurs due to the consumption of pitta provoking foods such as sour, salty and spicy foods. These foods lead to an increase in Amlabhava, which forms Ama Rasa and vitiates the pitta
