It's a London Thing No.42: Just Getting On With It

By Lwblog @londonwalks
It’s a London Thing is our Wednesday series in which we turn the spotlight on a unique aspect of London – perhaps a curious shop, sometimes an eccentric restaurant, a hidden place, book or oddity. The subject matter will be different every week. The running theme, however, will remain constant: you have to come to London to enjoy it. It’s A London Thing.

Looking at the history books it seems fair to say that, over the centuries, London has not had its troubles to seek. Invasion. Plague. Attack. Fire.

And through it all Londoners have just jolly well gotten on with their affairs.

Pepys did so to such an extent that he risked plague to stay and chronicle the events of 1665:

“This day, much against my will, I did in Drury Lane see two or three houses marked with a red cross upon the doors, and ‘Lord Have Mercy upon Us’ writ there – which was a sad sight to me, being the first of the kind that I ever saw.”

And then there was this, now famous, campaign from 1939…

It has been suggested that such a slogan is redundant in London: this is what Londoners do as a matter of course.

Thanks to everyone who joined us over the last few days and nights on the various London Walks that have been taking place as usual, and we look forward to seeing more of you soon. Normal service is maintained.

Just getting on with it. It’s A London Thing.
