Is God's Word Still Relevant?

By Albert Wagner @albertwagner4
Of all the questions people ask about Christianity there is one that is more surprising than others.
Some people actually ask,
"Is God's word still applicable today?"

After the initial aghast that such a question could be asked, it gets a person to think.
As Holy Week was last week there is an importance to realizing it wasn't just something that happened 2,00o years ago, but it is still relevant today.
First a person would ask why God's word wouldn't be applicable in modern society.  Maybe because:
  • there are no longer things such as sacrifices to animals
  • the Jewish culture was a lot different than the current one, in general
  • the Prophets came two thousand years ago or more
  • God doesn't seem to speak directly to people in the way he did back then, I.e. Abraham
  • modern technology seems a long way from ancient times
The response to this is none of these things limit God's word and how it applies to humans.  The overriding principle is a person's personal relationship with God.  Christianity is a progression (even in heaven).
Also, since God is all-knowing, he was aware of all of this (and more) from the creation of the world.
However, the bulleted list above can also be viewed in terms of how God's word still applies. How?
  • Jesus fulfilled the prophecies of the Old Testament and salvation lies with him
  • the culture of a place changes the method you worship God, but not the effect
  • God still chooses people to work out his plan, even if they are not called "prophets."
  • God still speaks to you, even if it can be difficult to figure out how
  • there is a lot of religious information on the World Wide Web
The Bible's Meaning In Contemporary Society
It is important to remember the same issues that plagued humans in ancient times are still here, even if they appear different outwardly.  Technology might be different, but what humans want deep down remains the same.
It goes back to an old adage about the Old Testament that stated ANY situation a human finds themselves in is addressed in some way.
The things Jesus died to save us from apply at any time, such as self-control, patience, persistence, etc.  Jesus is focused on the inward, and not the outward.
Even something like money could be viewed with this template.  Money might be physical, but God is focused on your priorities of how you got it and what you did with it.  Money is the medium.
Recently, and with the implementation of Obamacare, some religious values have again taken the forefront in American society.  Things like same-sex marriage, abortion, murder rates and poverty have been divisive issues getting attention.  They all relate to health care in some way.
These things were all addressed in the Bible in some form.  God knew from the foundation of the world these problems would plague humans and they apply at any time period.

The answer to the question, then, is:
Yes, The Bible Is Still Relevant

It comes down to having a progressive relationship with Jesus Christ, regardless of when that is.
