Founder Niamh Barker established her company in August 2007, having spent 18 months looking for the right mill. After years of working in the pharmaceutical industry, eventually she felt it was time to move on and create her own company of luxurious products that would be based and manufacture its products entirely in the UK. The inspiration for the original Travelwrap derived from her regular business trips and her need to have a beautiful knitted cashmere travel blanket she could roll up in instead of the acrylic airline blanket. Her idea has since been multi-awarded: Travelwrap Company won the Best New Business International Award (the speech she gave in Time Square NYC will always be an unforgettable experience for her), the Luxury Gift of the Year 2008 by the UK Gift Association and the 2009 Stevie Award.
Renowned Scottish cashmere and stylish-yet-comfortable style meet in the the company’s signature piece, the Travelwrap, in a very special knitted cashmere wrap available in a range of colours. The cashmere the company uses is sourced from Inner Mongolia, and the products are crafted on the Scottish Borders in a centuries-old mill of rich and established heritage – in 2013, the mill was granted The Royal Warrant by The Prince of Wales for the manufacture and supply of Estate Tweed cloth to the Royal household. Apart from its superior quality, the mill is known internationally for its sustainable practices, an issue of great importance for Barker; it actively participates in programs to help prevent over-intensive grazing of pastures by cashmere goats, and has worked with the same group of herdsmen for over 200 years. Barker and her team follow closely every stage of production, from the knitting machines to quality control and hand-finishing. Today the company has expanded its collection to include a range of knitted accessories.
