A big part of crafting and blogging is the community. I’ve come across so many talented people in the blogosphere, and they’re all so inspiring. I guess that’s why Craftgawker and Pinterest are so addicting! It’s really neat to see one person post a project, and another person post their take on that same project.
That very thought led to the creation of myDIY. myDIY is a collaborative online crafting party designed to inspire creative thought and interpretation. Each month, a material or topic will be posted along with several bloggers’ interpretations of the idea. We offer our own projects to show how one idea can be interpreted in so many different ways!
Here is where you come in. We invite you to gather inspiration from our projects and link-up your own interpretation. myDIY is meant to be an exercise in creativity – rather than reading a tutorial online and executing it exactly as specified, we hope to truly encourage and develop creativity through this project!
myDIY will take place over one month, allowing plenty of time for all of you lovely readers to post and link-up your own projects. At the end of the month, we plan to showcase our favorite projects, as well as host a giveaway in which all participants will be automatically entered.

Flip flops!
Everyone’s got some flip flops, right? If not, you can buy them anywhere for just a few dollars. We thought they would be a great raw material to be inspired by for our first project. My flip flop refashion was inspired by rope knots. I’ve been seeing a lot of nautical-inspired rope bracelets on pinterest, and wanted to try it out.
Materials
-3/16″ clothesline rope (I got mine at Home depot – it came in a 100yard bundle)
-needle and thread
-hot glue gun
Steps
2. Fold that in half again.
3. Make a loop at the top, then place the right strands of the rope over the left and hold in place. Take the right strands of rope over the left a second time.
4. Take the right-side strands and feed them through the loop at the top.
5-7. Pull thread taut to form the knot. The rope is pretty forgiving, so it’s pretty easy to adjust the knot if you need to.
2. Fold the rope in half.
3. Pin the first of the two knots on top of the 3-inches of rope that connects the knots. Leave about 1-inch of a loop up top. Take your needle and thread and sew all the knots in place.
Next, cut the straps off your flip flops.
2. Hook that end through the loop on a set of the rope you just knotted.
3. Feed the rope end back through the same hole of the flip flop. You might need to use the pointed end of a pair of scissors to help you do this.
4. Tape the ends of the knotted rope cord together, then feed them through each of the other holes. This is what it’ll look like when all the rope ends are connected.
5. For each rope end: Tie a single knot. Hot glue the knot, to seal the seams together.
6. Trim the ends. You’ll want to trim this pretty close, so it’ll fit into the hole on the bottom of the flip flop.
7. Fill the hole with hot glue, then push the knot into place. Glue the bottom of the rope to seal it in place.
Not bad, right? I bet these would look better with some colored thread woven between the rope strands! This would also be a great project to do to a pair of flip flops where the strap has broken off.
