GUEST POST Background of the bookby K.F. BreeneThere were a couple ideas that created Into the Darkness. The major drive was that I wanted to write a paranormal book with a new concept. I wanted the concept of vampires without the limitations of someone else’s creation. This would then free me up to explore the super-natural. Like spells and swords. And dangerous villains with lots of power.Suspension of believe needed? Obviously. This is fiction. But within the world of this book, these beings could be real. And not your average paranormal heroes. That idea formed, it was time for a heroine. When I was about ready to write this, I was getting a lot of pressure for a fourth book in the Jessica Brodie Diaries. People love Jessica’s quirky humor and fun-loving attitude. I also wanted a girl that would jump into adventure with a can-do attitude. A physical girl that could laugh away the danger. I wanted to bring in these elements and splash the whole thing with magic. But what’s a fun, adventurous spin on paranormal without a side-kick? Enter Charles. I needed someone to bounce ridiculousness off of the heroine. A guy that didn’t take anything too seriously, and upped the fun factor. He’s young, for his race, and hilarious (without meaning to be). He gets stuck between the stern, domineering hero and quirky, fun heroine beautifully. Finally, I wanted a love like no other. With having to explain the paranormal aspects, I wanted something that couldn’t be explained. Two halves of one soul, each half tugging mercilessly at the other. The hero and heroine’s need for each other is at the root of all of this. As is Sasha’s wide-eyed approach to this whole new life. She wants to finally fit in somewhere, which is something I think many of us struggle with. What she finds with Stefan (the hero) is a neat new facet to her world, and a connection to her past. With all that floating around in my noggin, it was time to start ticking away at the ol’ keyboard. This was when things started to heat up. I try to keep all my stories moving, and this one is no different. I didn’t let it lull. I also made sure to keep the humor, action and romance prevalent, often all at the same time (wink). I kept this a novella (short story) to heighten the quick-moving pace. I wanted a blast of adventure and a dose of the paranormal in a neat little package. With the overall concept mapped out, and with a fuzzy structure, I filled in the meat of the story by the seat of my pants—kind of how Sasha learns about this new type of people. I had fun writing it, and hope that others have fun reading it.
INTO THE DARKNESS
by K.F. Breene
I’d always been different. I saw objects in the night where others saw emptiness. Large, human shaped shadows, fierce yet beautiful, melting into the darkness. I collected secrets like other women collected bells; afraid to fully trust lest my oddities be exposed.
Until I saw him. He’d been gliding down the street, unshakable confidence in every step. It wasn’t just that he was breathtakingly handsome with perfect features. Something about him drew me. Sucked my focus to him and then tugged at my body. As his eyes met mine, I was entrapped.
No one had noticed him. He’d been right there, just beyond the light, but only I had perceived.
I had to know if he was real. Or maybe I really was crazy. And even when my secret box was blasted wide open, dangers hurled at me like throwing knives, I couldn’t stop until I unraveled his true identity.
I just had to know.

EXCERPT
As I met his black eyes, his puzzled expression deepened. “You’re human…”
“We established that, yes. What I want to know is, if I am human, what does that make you? And why do I notice you when others usually don’t?”
His head cocked to the side. His easy balance, his lethal edge; he was like a blade resting on billowing silk. “Very few humans are able to withstand our pheromones. Fewer still to break a Kolma once it has been placed. You’ve not been trained, that’s obvious, so how is this possible when you’re definitely human? Do you possess the blood of another species?”
I could barely think past the pounding ache of my body, begging to touch him. I needed to get a grip! He was revealing some very interesting factoids that I needed to jot down in my mental notebook.
His nostrils flared. “Charles was right; your arousal is a unique scent. Like a spicy, warm drink on a mid-winter’s night. It rises above other smells, entrancing the mind.”

While she could wrangle numbers with the best of 'em, and even though she wore the crown as the most outspoken, belligerent accountant in the world, her mind got as stuffy as her daily routine. It was here that she dusted off her creative hat and began writing. Now she makes movies in her head, not worried about lighting, shutter speed or editing equipment. Turns out, a computer is much easier to manage than a crowd of actors. She should know, she was an actor at one time.
