Mañana started in 2013 on the Central Coast of NSW, Australia. Picking up their instruments together as high school friends, they have been as one through every stage of their musical growth. The band are touring round along the east coast of Australia this summer and are also working on their next album due out in 2016.
Tomatrax caught up with Tom Kitchener, the band's lead singer, to ask a few questions.
How did the band form?We were all tight friends before we discovered music. Picking up our instruments together in highschool, we just started jamming with some questionable results at first. We weren't just one of those bands whose members already had established skills. We had none!
Where did the name Mañana come from?We named ourselves after an Australian south-coast pub that we all had a good night at on a road trip.
What was the inspiration behind the video for 'Cruise on, fade out'?'Cruise On, Fade Out' was written at the precise time that Lead Guitarist Maxim Avigdor had discovered his inner funk. The metaphoric dam broke and 'Cruise On, Fade Out' exploded from its shackles. The song represents never holding back and having a great time and going with the flow. We tried to complement that in the video.
You've just started touring in support of your single, how has that been going?The support has been overwhelming. Airlie Beach Festival of Music was jam packed full of good times and unforgettable memories. We made lasting friendships and performed our arses off to enthusiastic crowds. The support at our home town show made us feel really loved and gave us a big boost of energy to continue our tour. * What can fans expect from your show? They can expect to be dancing like no one is watching and then suddenly be captivated in a heart-felt song that shoots straight to the heart.
You've been working on your second album, how has that been going?Very well. We are meticulous writers and like to take our time in perfecting our material. We're well on our way to developing an album we will all be very happy with. Good things take time.
How will the next album compare to your debut release?The difference with our upcoming album is the maturity of our sound as a band. Our method of song writing has changed dramatically since our first release. We've been working on our band chemistry since the beginning but I think we are now much closer to finding the best ways to work with each other. Lately we've been writing better songs and having more fun playing than ever.
Do you know what the album will be titled?It's something that will just invent itself when the time comes I think. The song writing is our main priority at the moment.
Each member has different musical influences, is it hard to make the different styles fit together when writing your music?There's no rules in music. We just play what comes to us and it usually works. There's a lot of experimenting and trial and error but as I said earlier we are coming up with better and better approaches to writing songs that uses our musical differences as our strengths.
Do you ever listen to your own music?Not often, we know it like the back of our hands.
What music do you listen to?We all have different tastes. Someone that we've all been digging lately is D'angelo with his new album 'Black Messiah'
What do you have planned once your second album is finished?By that time I reckon we will be more than ready to smash out an Australian-wide tour.
