Interview with Kyle Falconer

After five hit albums, a Mercury Prize nomination and countless sold-out shows with The View, the band's frontman Kyle Falconer will finally tour Australia solo this July.

Tomatrax caught up with Kyle to ask a few questions.

You ' ve released a number of albums with the View, how does performing solo compare with playing in a band?

I ' m still playing with a band live, but it ' s just me who has full control and charge. So I do enjoy it but then sometimes it ' s nice to have the band to fall back on or to have their input too. I do miss playing in a band but for now I ' m enjoying solo.

You achieved a lot of critical and commercial success with the View, does this make you feel any pressure when performing solo? Where did the title No thank you come from? The album explores some difficult personal experiences, is it hard to have these on show for everyone to hear?

I ' ve come to terms with it and it ' s nice to hear when people say my songs help them. Sometimes you do choke up a little still at certain parts in songs that mean something more than others, you ' re only human.

What made you pick ' Poor me ' as the album ' s single?

We were friends for a few years, I filled in for Amy Winehouse one time then it sort of stuck and I did it a few times and then it just went from there.

You ' ll be touring Australia soon, what can fans expect from your show?

There ' s gonna be a few view bangers of course, but predominantly my new album, doing songs I ' ve never done before too, I also love a good request at the end. It ' s going to be like nothing I ' ve ever done before. It ' s been received great over here in the UK so let ' s hope Australia is the same!

Do you ever listen to your own music? What other music do you listen to?

I listen to a lot of country, The Beatles etc, classics music, oasis, stone roses, the clash... but new music right now I ' m loving The Struts.

What do you have planned after your tour?

Going straight on holiday off the plane to spend some quality time with the family then off to LA for some exciting things to happen in the near future!! Then festivals of course mixed in over the summer.
