#InspireMonday: Responsibility

By Dr Gbenga Adebayo @dradebayo

Happy Monday!

I read a story a while back of a man accosted by the police for destroying an utility pole with his car (presumably under the influence). Without too much thinking, the man blurted out, “Officer it is not my fault! The pole just came out of nowhere and hit my car!”

Responsibility has various dictionary definitions. It may be defined as “the state or fact of having a duty to deal with something or of having control over someone.” we may also say it is “the opportunity or ability to act independently and make decisions without authorization.”  If I may coin a definition, I would say responsibility is the state of being dutiful to act independently and deal with the consequences of our actions.

Fatherhood is not just a title. It is a responsibility. Without the responsibility,  a man becomes simply a sperm donor. Joseph is the father of Jesus because he assumed responsibility or his upbringing and safety. In commemoration of Father’s Day 2015, I salute all fathers who have embraced the responsibility of fatherhood. May the joy and blessings of fatherhood be ours.

Happy Father’s Day!
