Happy Monday!
It’s another Monday. You have a brand new working week ahead of you. The week ahead is loaded with opportunities and pregnant with possibilities.
Perhaps you are not so optimistic. Per chance you woke up this morning dreading what this week will bring. Perhaps you are disenfranchised with the drudgery of what you do. Friend, the ball is in your court: better days are ahead! My message to you today is simple, don’t conclude you have a bad life simply because you have had a few bad days, months or even years. Your life is more than that. This piece “#InspireMonday : Better Days Ahead” is for you.
Permit me to share with you a story with you to illustrate this point. On a recent visit back to my university, I met some people who were hostel porters and gatemen back when I first met them 20 years ago as an undergraduate. 20 years after, they were still in the same position. It suddenly struck me that they didn’t have to have remained in those positions. I don’t and can’t say what made them porters and gatemen 20 years ago. I may not be able to say the challenges and issues they faced in the previous 30 or 40 years they had lived before then. But this I know, they could have changed their lot In 20 years. It is said that it takes about 10,000 hours of practice to become an expert in any chosen field. They had used over 174,000 hours (if the anecdote is true, enough time to become experts in over 170 fields) and appeared none the more endowed than they were. They could have armed themselves with more skills. They could have taken adult lessons. They were working in a instistution of higher learning. They were meeting people everyday whose core area of interest was knowledge and expertise acquisition. They were working “dying of thirst” whilst surrounded by streams.
They probably didn’t know it back then that they had another 20 years ahead of them. The certainty and drudgery of the present they were facing stopped them from mining the treasure-trove the 20 years they had ahead of them could have delivered to them. Another 20 years may await them. I wonder what they will do with it?
My dear reader, what will you do with the next 20 years? What do you wish you could be 20 years from today? What of 30 years? 40 years? 50 years? I tell you, with God on your side, it can be done. One step at a time, you can get it done.
Refuse to be shackled by the history of what has been. Today is the beginning of the remaining of your life. The future is yours. What will you do with it?
