INEC Free to Transmit Election Outcomes Electronically – Senate

The Senate has now given approval for election outcomes to be transmitted electronically.

The Senate made the decision on Tuesday saying that the Impartial Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC) is free to find out the mode of transmission of outcomes throughout elections, together with digital transmission or guide transmission.

This represents reversal of its earlier decision that INEC can transmit elections outcomes electronically with approval from NCC and the Nationwide Meeting.

The resolutions of the Higher Chamber adopted a movement titled: "Motion for recommittal" sponsored by the Senate Chief Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North).

Abdullahi in his lead debate mentioned the Senate: "Recollects that the Electoral Act No. 6, 2010 (Repeal and re-enactment) Invoice, 2021 was handed by the Senate and the Home of Representatives.

"Observes that after important examination of the Invoice by the Senate Committee on INEC, some elementary points which require contemporary legislative motion on the next clauses - 43, 52, 63, and 87 had been noticed. "Desirous of the necessity to deal with the remark by the Committee and make essential amendments; and "Counting on order 1(b) and 53(6) of Senate Standing Order. "Accordingly resolves to: Rescind its decision on the affected Clauses of the Bill as passed and re-commit same to the Committee of the Whole for consideration and passage."

Order 1(b) of the Senate Standing Orders reads: "In all instances not offered for hereinafter or by Sessional or different Orders or follow of the Senate shall by Decision regulate its process.

Additionally, Order 53(6) of the Senate Standing Orders reads: "It shall be out of order to attempt to reconsider any specific question upon which the Senate has come to a conclusion during the current session except upon a substantive motion for rescission."

The approval adopted an modification to Clause 52(3) of the Electoral Act (modification) Invoice by Senator Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi (Niger North) in the course of the consideration of a report by the Senate Committee on the Impartial Nationwide Electoral Fee (INEC).

The Committee's had initially beneficial in in Clause 52(3) that "The Commission (INEC) may transmit results of elections by electronic means where and when practicable."
