Indiana Farmers Market: Tell City

Tell City Farmer’s Market in Tell City, Indiana

We had to head to the Perry County Tourism Bureau at the train depot in Tell City, Indiana.

Inside, there’s a lot of neat things to see but today? Well, let’s take a look at what’s outside!

Tell City Farmer’s Market

Underneath a covered section of the Tell City train depot, a building that’s been wonderfully rebuilt to mimic the long ago depot (lost to fire in the 1980s), visitors will find the seasonal Tell City Farmer’s Market!

Spring through Fall, vendors set up their wares. Happily, there’s a bit of variety to be found.

I wandered through the tables, camera in hand. The Indiana farmer’s market offerings always vary but you can count on a few items that never change: like corn, potatoes, and tomatoes! Vegetables, fruits, and even homemade bread had a place at the market. Fun!

At one point, I asked the local farmer if he would mind if I took a photo of his produce. Some of the other vendors, though a bit taken aback, were fine with it but one man in particular had a different response.

He looked at me for a minute and then said, in a slow Southern Indiana drawl, “I know who you are. We only get one TV station in town.”

Surprised, I asked, “Is it PBS?” He nodded and I got the images I needed. My husband and I chuckled about it later: four and a half hours away from home and I was recognized!

This farmer’s market setup is fantastic! I love how the people of Tell City recreated a historic structure within their town to their advantage. The covered tables keep it cooler and, because of its location, the parking is ample.

Other towns should take note of this one. Don’t rip down your old, historic buildings! Find them a new purpose and give your town new life in the process. Tell City had to build a new one. Hang on to what you have and make it work for you!
