Indiana Blogs Cooking With Wolfes

Cooking with Wolfes is as Indiana blog that gets busy in the kitchen! Whether he’s making his own take on a restaurant favorite or is cooking up his own concoction, Skylar will inspire you to get cookin’!

A fan of farmer’s markets, you’ll find fresh seasonal ingredients–and plenty of good recipes to use them in.

I know I found a few (okay, a lot!) of recipes I can’t wait to try. I think you’ll enjoy this Hoosier food blog, too.

Indiana Blogs: Cooking with Wolfes

Why did you start Cooking with Wolfes?
I’ve been blogging for about 4 ½ years. I started over at Boilermaker Kitchen, which was a cooking blog I kept while I was in school at Purdue. Once I started branching out into other areas and topics, I decided to try and make it more uniquely me.

I get asked a lot (I’m probably humblebragging, I’m sorry) for recipes, so I figured this was a good outlet to share my experiences and recipes with friends, family, and anyone who happened upon it.

What about that name? Why Cooking with Wolfes?
Growing up my mom always referred to our kitchen as Casa de Lobo (the wolf house), and I’ve always enjoyed throwing my last name into whatever I do. I was raised by Wolfes, so I thought this would be a fun play on words.

What are three of your most favorite posts?
These are three of my favorite posts and dishes:

  • Kale Soup — Something I make a lot, and even won a soup contest with. I like to blog more in the summer when our farmer’s markets are in full swing, and this dish was inspired by one of those trips.
  • Fish Tacos — This is, without a doubt, my favorite dish. It’s my recreation of street food I had in Ensenada, and now that we actually can get good fish from places like North Shore Seafoods, I love it even more.
  • Pi Day — Because I’m such a nerd, my wedding anniversary is on Pi Day. I also love pie, and chocolate cream is my favorite to make. My wife is extremely happy when one of these shows up in our refrigerator.

What keeps you ready and raring to post? Why do you blog?
Experimenting and trying new things make me keep writing. I go up and down in post frequency depending on what’s going on in my life, but I try to take time to share any new experiences and recipes as I go along.

Since I’m living in West Lafayette I’ve also started talking about some of the dining options we have. But what really keeps me going is when someone tells me they tried something I made and how much they enjoyed it. Making people happy with food is why I cook.

Let’s talk kitchen gadgets–do you have any faves or “can’t live withouts?”
My beer bottle opener. Just kidding, that’s more of a “companion”. I’m very attached to my knives, I’ve learned a bad knife can just ruin your day. Though I’m guilty of having many gadgets in my kitchen, I’m a purist, so give me a solid skillet, maybe a wok, and I’m happy.

The perfect question for a food blogger: what five people living or dead would you want to cook for?
I can’t tell you how many times I think about this. It’s evolved into somewhat of a “how great would it be to get these people together around a table” question. Alton Brown, the man taught me so much, and shares my passion of cooking and science, so I would love to enjoy a meal with him.

Anthony Bourdain as well, he has the most honest opinions about food, and he could bring the beer. Mario Batali, after reading Heat, he must be a great dinner guest. Bill Simmons, which may seem an odd choice, but considering how much I read his work, I feel cooking for him would be a lot of fun. Lastly my wife, without her I would not be able to truly enjoy this meal.

Is there anything else that you would like little Indiana readers to know?
Living in Indiana has opened my eyes to a lot of new foods and methods of cooking. We have surprisingly strong international cuisine in West Lafayette, wonderful farmers markets throughout the state, and a food culture that seems to gain importance more and more each year.

It’s wonderful food that makes a great microcosm of culinary exploration. Also, this state has started producing some of the best beer in the country. Local restaurants and businesses make life wonderful for me, and my food better.
