Indian Scientists Develop Battery Technology To Make EVs With 1600 Km Battery Range

Indian scientists are working on next-generation battery technology to make electric vehicles super efficient. A joint research team from IIT Bombay and Shiv Nadar University is working on new lithium battery cells. The researchers claim that the lithium battery they are working on will have an energy density three times higher than the conventional Li-ion battery. If the claims of these scientists are valid, it can revolutionize the electric vehicle industry.

These new battery cells are based on Lithium-Sulfur (Li-S) chemistry. Not only that, but Li-S batteries will also be cheaper than current Li-ion batteries. In addition, the technology developed by the scientists would allow the environmentally friendly production of these battery cells.

According to reports, the production of battery cells requires petroleum by-products as well as agro-waste elements and copolymers such as cardanol and eugenol as cathode materials. Cardanol is nothing more than the by-product of processing cashew nuts, while eugenol is clove oil.

So basically this technology uses biomolecules in the form of cathodes for Li-S battery cells. Although this is a new concept, it promises great results. If your energy density has tripled, that just means more range for your electric cars.

Indian Scientists' Battery Technology Has More Electric Range Than Li-Ion Battery

Bimlesh Lochab, associate professor at Shiv Nadar University, told PTI: " The ability of three times the energy density, coupled with significantly safer technology, promises to accelerate the adoption of clean, battery-powered energy in several areas. "

Professor Lochab explained by giving an example of a car. He said that a car with a range of 400 km can travel 1600 km on a single charge thanks to this battery technology. This means that one will be able to travel from Delhi to Mumbai with just one charge.

None of the electric vehicles in the industry offer a range of around 1,600 km. Even Tesla, which currently holds the title of producing the longest-range electric car, offers 646 km.

In a world where all countries are determined to improve battery technology, it seems Indian scientists are already on the right track to lead the industry.

In addition, the use of these battery cells is not limited to only electric vehicles, but it will also benefit electronic gadgets such as smartphones, tablets and laptops.
