In my continuing adventures photographing flowers in the studio – I’ve been really lucky to find some wonderful dahlias at the local farmer’s markets. Wollam Gardens is a local flower farm with booths at the Saturday Kensington market and the Sunday Bethesda market. If you’re in the area – be sure to check out their flowers – they always have wonderful flowers available
The weekend I was photographing the Peach and White Dahlia and the pair of It’s A Girl Dahlias ( a wonderful pink/yellow dahlia) I started experimenting with different lighting setups and backdrops. Previously, I had photographed all the flower with a big soft box over the light and against a white background. You’ll see several photos in this set against the white background photographing in this manner.

Then I switched to using a soft strip box over the light and angled the light making the background look gray even though it was photographed against white paper.

Finally, I switched to black paper for the background to give a totally different look to the photos.

I’m still figuring out what I like and don’t like to do in the studio. I hope you’re enjoying seeing my photos as I try different combinations. I’d love to hear if there’s a look you prefer
