Spot the difference
Just under one week ago, I arrived home from Italy’s beautiful Amalfi coast. Everywhere you look there are gorgeous colours: the pastel-washed houses, the azure sea, the bright flowers tumbling down the walls. Below are two views of a little alleyway in seaside town of Vico Equense which show you just what I mean. Can you spot the difference?
Via Giusso, Vico Equesne
The original image is on the left. When my brother (who is an outstanding photographer in his own right) saw it, he noticed the ugly graffiti on the left wall and decided to do something about it. A few hours later, he sent a new version to me with the graffiti digitally scrubbed out. What do you think? In the end, I have decided to keep the messy one on my photo set as well. My reason is that I think we often appreciate beauty best when it sits side by side with a little bit of mess. After 26 years as a local pastor, where courage, folly, doubt, faith and laughter sit side by side, I have always believed this.
It was a bright sunny morning last Sunday in Vico Equesne last week, and the town’s famous Church of the Ascension was looking its best. You can see that in the photo below – which required no editing.
