I spent mine working on a small home project that I had been wanting to accomplish for quite some time. As you can imagine, I spend a great deal of time designing other peoples spaces that I often do not get much time to tackle my own. A long weekend is always a good time to create small design projects or complete home maintenance tasks because not only will you have the time to complete the project, there are always special deals and discounts being offered from local retailers.
As well, there are usually a number of garage sales in your neighbourhood. This is a great opportunity to take a walk, get some exercise and purchase some of the materials or decor items that you may need.
My Labour Day Design Project – updating the front entrance of my home.
The lighting issue was easily solved by adding an open chandelier and I replaced the mirror to match the color and decor. I updated an antique sewing machine table and stool set which was bought in a church basement flea market. It was originally meant to be an end table, but I felt it was too high and decided it was a better fit in this particular space. With some help, I installed wainscotting (Kandy Gray is a master with a chop saw and a nail gun) with a shelf to add texture, vertical interest and to provide additional shelving. I had to admit, I am very pleased with the result.
I cannot believe that I waited so long to start this project. What do you think?
Do you have any design projects you have been putting off for a rainy day? Perhaps it is time to get started, you never know how they might turn out.
