Imaginary World: Childlishly Inspired

Behold and take a peek into the quirky and bizarre minds of three local artists hailing from Yogyakarta; they are Tina Wahyuningsih, thedeoMIXBLOOD and Rennie ‘Emonk’ Agustine. The Imaginary World art exhibition displays a varied collection of artwork, each with their own distinct style, influenced by the artists’ inner childhood dreams and nightmares.

Note: Apologies for the subpar picture quality, as they were taken from a mobile device. They are still in its original, raw, unedited version. Click to enlarge.

Rennie ‘Emonk’ Agustine’s defies reality through her artwork and has a simple message (as stated in the booklet): “we can be anything in our life and whatever we choose to be, we become the main performer”.

theodeoMIXBLOOD actually consists of two members named Dila and Otong. They employ a range of objects like actions figures, fabrics, beads, wayang puppets and batiks to construct hideously grotesque creatures that haunt and terrorize kids’ dreams. They claim that their constructions are inspired by childhood traumatic events. I wonder what sort of events these two encountered?

Lastly, Tina Wahyuningsih’s work is visually more dreamy and fairy tale-ish in style. The animals personify her imaginary world. And perhaps her role as a mother has played a big influence on her creative outlook and imagination.

The Imaginary World exhibition is currently being displayed at Plaza Senayan’s ground level (to the right of the entrance). Curated by Jeong-ok Jeon, the exhibition has opened since June 30th and will continue to do so until July 15.
