Wednesday night, Imaginary Cities played SubCulture (amazing new venue alert) for the release of their 2nd album Fall of Romance. The Canadian duo, comprised of Rusty Matyas and vocalist Marti Sarbit, played a short set and were backed by a new band performing with instruments the venue had just acquired. While this sounds like a potential for disaster, the band laughed it off and managed to move effortlessly through their set. Although the depth and power of the album doesn’t translate well to an intimate live setting, the lack of complexity allowed Marti’s raw and soulful voice to shine during the harmonies and soar during her solos. The band has taken a leap with their newer songs, a risk that certainly paid of.
