The 1879 Log Jail in Nashville, Indiana is an easy jaunt from the downtown. It’s also a very quick trip into the past!
The original 1839 Nashville, Indiana jail was a very heavy duty jail. Once a criminal was placed inside, there was little chance of escape, owing to the double layer of 18″ thick walls, the entrance in through the roof via rope.
The “new” jail constructed in 1879 used two layers of walls, extra thick, and a foot apart from each other. It’s small. Dark. I can’t imagine spending time closed up in there and, I would imagine, the women locked up in the top level wouldn’t have had it much easier (although I wasn’t able to peek inside).
