2014 has barely begun, yet so many great tracks have already penetrated the ether. One that I can’t get out of my head is “Bite Fresh Air” from New York psych-rockers, ICEWATER. With their debut LP only a few weeks old, this track stands out with the fluid movement of its vocal line, guided by the plodding, metronomic pace of the drums. Despite the ethereal cooing of synths and conversational guitar riffs, “Bite Fresh Air” never loses direction, thanks to the occasional drum breakdowns and interjection of the memorable chorus. Singer Malcolm Perkins’s style can be forceful and percussive at some moments, but seamless and glassy at others, keeping the melody interesting by transforming the song’s recurring themes. In celebration of their new album, titled Collector’s Edition, you’ll have a few opportunities to catch ICEWATER in the near future, at Glasslands on 1/27, and their album release show at Baby’s All Right on 2/1.
