Welcome to our #IReadItInABook feature where we eat cauliflower for breakfast, take on storm Denis and beach comb in November. This time we are attempting to make food for Unicorns. All because, we read it in a book!
Unicorn mad
Unicorn Food by Sandra Mahut is, like all things unicorn, very pretty. The pictures are beautiful, the names are flouncy.
It’s strap line is ‘Natural recipes for edible rainbows’ and yes there is a soup (celestial no less) that consists mainly of purple carrots and red cabbage. There are even suggestions for natural colourings. However with recipes such as the ‘Galaxy Mocktail’ that has blue food colouring, purple sugar, grenadine syrup AND cocktail cherries just be aware, this is not a health book.
The challenge
With three daughters stuck at home it seemed like the perfect time to make unicorn food. Not knowing any actual unicorns I decided to make a recipe I thought my unicorn mad daughter would love. The Rainbow Smoothie seemed to come without the art degree requirement: surely I could cut a star out of kiwi? Alas in the midst of lock down I couldn’t find a dragon fruit and purchasing such a large amount of berries turned out to be quite expensive on top of fruit juice and yogurt. I utilised empty jam jars as the book suggested although skipped the random rainbow paraphernalia on top. I did manage a straw, paper of course, and would possibly have stretched to sprinkles if it had been a special occasion.
My daughter thought it was wonderful and by the time she had let her sisters have a try it was quickly demolished. Containing quite a lot of fruit and yogurt there are worse treats you could give your children but it was expensive, even my pared back version. Without doubt it is perfect for a unicorn inspired party but it’s not everyday food. Then again it’s not every day you need to feed a unicorn.
