I’m Glad They’re On Our Side

By Eowyn @DrEowyn

When watching an airshow a few years ago my response was, “Thank God they’re on our side.”

We watched with earplugs as these awesome beasts blasted overhead. They could go straight up, stop, loiter, looking around in all directions like a helicopter, then speed up beyond the sound barrier, all virtually invisible to enemy weapons targeting systems. And though they were on display to us all in the 21st Century, Tom Clancey had already unmasked them in the 1994 in Debt of Honor.

And we all enjoyed describing our enemies and competitors as silly and incompetent. It was a rusting Russian military, who’s tanks were shown to be useless against our Desert Storm forces in Iraq. It was any number of self congratulating references to the US as the “World’s Only Remaining Superpower,” by all the left-leaning media.

We were strong. Thank God all the super weapons were on our side. Even as I was saying and thinking these things, I could see the devil’s best possible move on the chessboard of human history…

…this move might be to change who “we” are. “We” who own all the baddest weapons might be at risk of turning into the worst thing that ever happened to the world. Alexis de Tocqueville wrote about the new American republic saying,

“America is great because she is good. If America ceases to be good, America will cease to be great.”

The authenticity of the above quote is actually in dispute, but its prescience is not. If the moral core of our society can be hollowed out, none of our victories will benefit the world or us. Like Hitler’s undeniable success in rebuilding of the German economy, all of which served only to oppress the world, we are at risk of misreading our victories.

The question is, “Who are we, and what are we made of?”

So I’m glad they’re on our side,
but are they really?

Not so happy anymore.
