Chappie is coming in early March, which means star Hugh Jackman is on the road doing quite a lot of press for this latest Neill Blomkamp sci-fi adventure. Obviously, talk is going to turn to Wolverine 3 and Marvel's recent deal with Sony that allows Spider-Man to appear in the MCU. While he's talked a bit about these things in the past week, the actor opened up to MTV about Wolverine 3's basis in past Marvel comic lore, and just how optimistic he is about someday teaming up with Marvel's The Avengers on the big screen.
As you may already know, Patrick Stewart recently revealed that there are talks underway to have Professor X feature heavily in the Wolverine 3 storyline. And the actor claims he will likely be back to reprise his iconic X-Men role. While Hugh Jackman tried to dodge this question last week, he semi-confirmed it was true. Now, he tells MTV:
"I'm not going to deny that he's not...Let's just say, I'd be thrilled if he was part of it because I think that relationship is key. It's one of the keys. It was the key at the beginning and I think there's a long way to go."
Hugh Jackman also talked about the script, hinting that this next adventure will take place in a timeline we've never seen, presumably the one from the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past, where things have been slightly altered by time travel:
"It does draw on some comic book stuff. There are some things, but in typical fashion, sort of one main one with a few bits here and there and then opening it up. Jim [James Mangold] and I, we've been talking about it, he has a treatment. But I mean, we're a way out from it so we're in really good shape with it. I'm really, really excited about it."
The actor went onto talk about Spider-Man's inclusion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He seems optimistic that the X-Men and Avengers will one day meet, but will he be too old at that point to continue on as Wolverine?
"I like to think there's that possibility for all of it, and I would even like to think more that it doesn't happen out of necessity. When someone's run it into the ground or something. I optimistically love the idea of, "What the hell, Batman versus Iron Man versus Wolverine!" Let's just chuck 'em in. We'll see what happens, but maybe as these things go on more and more they'll want to and need to do all that stuff. I'm optimistic, I'd think it'd be great, but hey, it's not my billions of dollars behind this promise. [laughs] It's easy for us to speculate, "Why did they do that?!"
What do you think? Do you want to see Patrick Stewart reprise Professor X in Wolverine 3? Do you want Wolverine to meet the Avengers?
Wolverine 3 comes to theaters March 3rd, 2017 and stars Hugh Jackman. The film is directed by James Mangold.
