HSBC Trademark Applications for Cryptocurrency-Related Goods and Services
HSBC has filed two crypto-related trademark applications for its name and logo with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Mike Kondoudis, a USPTO-licensed trademark attorney, tweeted on Friday that HSBC’s trademark registrations indicate the bank’s aspirations for a variety of digital products and services, including those related to the exchange and transfer of virtual currencies.
HSBC submitted crypto-related trademark applications with serial numbers 97718803 and 97718583 on December 15. The bank’s apps detailed a vast array of products and services, such as sending, receiving, converting, and holding digital currency.
Several products and services related to the metaverse are also described in the trademark applications, such as “facilitating secure payment transactions by electronic means in the metaverse,” “providing banking services in the metaverse,” and “providing processing of virtual credit card, virtual debit card, virtual prepaid card, and virtual payment card transactions in the metaverse.” HSBC also included a number of NFT services, such as “downloadable digital files authenticated by non-fungible tokens (NFTs).”
HSBC entered the metaverse in March by forming a partnership with blockchain-based virtual gaming platform The Sandbox. However, Noel Quinn, the CEO of HSBC Group, declared in September that the bank had no plans to adopt cryptocurrencies.
A rising number of large corporations and financial institutions have filed trademark applications for a range of digital currency and metaverse-related goods and services. Visa, PayPal, and Western Union, among others, filed trademark applications linked to cryptocurrencies in October. Last month, JPMorgan Chase was granted a wallet trademark that covers a variety of virtual currencies and payment services.
