How Your Bedroom Design Could Be Causing Insomnia

Getting a good night of sleep can be harder to achieve than you think. There are lots of reasons why your sleep may be disrupted. If you find the mornings are tough, and you’re feeling lethargic, chances are you’re suffering from insomnia. So what’s causing it, and how can you cure it?

Bedrooms should be designed with sleep in mind. It’s nice to consider style and trends too, but your sleep is the most important factor. Bright, busy patterns on the bedding or the walls aren’t the best way to promote a calm, relaxing atmosphere. Instead, choose serene color palettes that are soothing.

Light is also thought to be a problem for those who struggle to sleep. The light from TV screens or tablets could be responsible for keeping you awake longer than you intended. Even while you’re asleep, light pollution can affect the quality of your sleep. Make sure you have blackout blinds or drapes to stop any street lights or early morning sun entering the room.

Sound is another problem. Ideally, everything in the house should be quiet. But a passing car or a rowdy party on the street can interrupt your sleep. Ear plugs can be uncomfortable, and it’s not really a good idea to try and drown out noises with music or the TV. Instead, try to keep the window closed. You may also prefer to keep the humidity at a regulated level too. This can be helpful if you suffer from sinus or chest problems. Remember to bring fresh air into your bedroom every day for healthy breathing as you sleep.

A comfortable bed is important if you want to sleep well. There are many different types of mattress. Latex is one of the most popular types at the moment because it breathes better than some others. This means you won’t get overheated during the night. Your choice of pillow is just as important. You want something that doesn’t become too warm. It should support the neck without causing discomfort.

Some people believe the orientation of the bed is important too. You may find that sleeping with your head in the East provides a more restful sleep. Other people believe that plenty of exercise before bedtime provide them with the best quality sleep. Perhaps you like to take a hot bath before bed? One thing that most people agree on is that a tidy bedroom is more relaxing to sleep in than a disorganized one. Make sure your room has plenty of storage solutions to keep things in their place.

When you design your bedroom, consider the things that most aid restful sleep. You may like your bed to face a particular direction. Or you may be keen on a particular color palette. If any of it is distracting you from falling asleep, now could be a good time to make some changes.
