How Would You Rate The Following Quotes?

I can’t really get into where these quotes came from, just know that a real life human being uttered these words.

In response to someone showing a “Spanish for Dummies” book.

“You’ll need that.  If you work in construction you’ll need that.  If you work in a restaurant, you’ll need that.  I worked in construction and I wish I had that.”

Is that racist?  I mean it is right?  You can’t just say that to a group of people straight up.

And this beauty about life:

“Winning is as American as apple pie.”

What the hell does that even mean?  Has anyone ever said that before?  Did I miss something?

The funny thing is that neither of these quotes are that terrible but when you’re talking to a group of people, you’ve got to keep things in context.  Saying that if you work in construction you need to be bilingual is one thing.  Saying it the way this guy did, just racist in my book.
