While snapping some photos of women wearing booties on the streets of NYC a few weeks ago I noticed a lot of lace up booties being worn. This trend, that has been going on for a few years, has finally reached critical mass as it seems everyone has embraced this casual, military-inspired trend that I definitely remember wearing in the 90's.
I decided to capture some of the ways women are wearing lace up booties in this quick video set to what I think is the perfect music.
I'm a total fan of these booties for casual weekends. I think they can go to work too if the pair is polished, refined and not too distressed. In fact, a client of mine just bought this pair from Frye last week and she definitely plans on wearing them at her job.
If you are liking the lace up booties trend but aren't sure how to incorporate it into your wardrobe check out the outfits below.
How to Wear Lace Up Booties
Outfit #1 These booties are a great look for casual weekends. With skinny jeans, you can tuck them right into your booties, like I did with this pair from Steve Madden, that have zippers, so you don't have to worry about lacing, with this distressed skinny pair from Lucky Brand. I added this easy grey sweater with cognac leather panels and finished the look with a burgundy moto handbag from Rebecca Minkoff, spruce green biker jacket from Zara, plaid scarf from Nordstrom and silver twist hoop earrings from Macy's.
Outfit #2 Lace up booties don't have to be distressed or too casual looking. You can also create sleek and modern outfits using them as well. In the outfit above, I styled these Vince Camuto lace up booties with basic black leggings from Karen Kane and a cozy cashmere sweater from Theory to create this clean look. Over the sweater I added this J. Crew collarless coat and finished the outfit with a pair of colorblocked gloves from Kate Spade, Nine West crossbody bag, disc earrings from Nest and black oversized sunglasses.
Outfit #3 Boyfriend jeans can be tough to wear once the weather gets cold. With potentially exposed ankles they're not exactly winter friendly. However, lace up booties, like this pair from Bandolino, can fill in that space and extend the longevity of your jeans. For the rest of the outfit, I styled the look with a long sleeve t-shirt from Ann Taylor, an oversized cardigan from Cos, printed Prana scarf, labradorite teardrop earrings from Charlene K. and burgundy bag from Elliott Luca.
Outfit #4 This autumnal look of tobacco colored skinny jeans from Boden and American Rag lace up booties is similar to how a lot of women were seen wearing their booties in the street style video. For a casual look, I added this grey turtleneck sweater and layered this boho drapey cardigan over it. For accessories, I used this cognac leather bag and gold hoops from Julie Vos.
Outfit #5 You aren't limited to wearing pants, leggings and jeans when wearing your lace up booties. They can be worn with skirts and dresses but I definitely recommend opaque tights and shorter skirt lengths. If flat just isn't your thing, you can also try a pair of heeled lace up booties, like this pair from Modcloth, that has been styled with chocolate brown opaque tights, a knit dress from Madewell, a faux leather tote from Sole Society, tortoise pendant from Bauble Bar and Cole Haan leather bracelet.
If you are looking for a flat, casual pair of boots for your winter weekends coming up, definitely check out lace up booties!
