I have never been a morning person. Maybe that’s because I never slept very well or maybe that’s because I really like to stay up late at night. I love to watch TV and browse on my computer when it’s dark outside, with no lights on in the house. Especially, with no noise except for the TV.
But I always wanted to learn how to turn my sleep-wake cycle upside down and go to bed early so I can wake up at the crack of dawn. This way, I could enjoy my day to the fullest. Well, it seems that, according to the book The Body Clock To A Better Health, only 1 in 10 people is a morning person. So I guess I am not alone.
The chronotypes
The sleep-wake cycle, also called circadian rhythm, is divided in three categories called chronotypes. 20% of the people have the “Late” chronotype, 10% have the “Early” one and the last 70% have the “Intermediate” one. Here is the chronotype definition, according to the Collins Dictionary:
Whether you’re a morning person or not: the time of day in which you are predisposed to be most active mentally, physically, and believe it or not morally and ethically.
But there are ways to change your chronotype if you really want to. Night owls can definitely become early birds by following some of the tips below. You can condition your brain so you won’t have any trouble waking up at the crack of dawn.
7 tips to help you become a morning person
- Go to bed earlier. The first and pretty obvious advice is to try and go to bed earlier. I know! It’s hard when you surf the web and find plenty of interesting articles to post on Facebook or pics of cute puppies and adorable kittens to pin on Pinterest, but you have to remember that if you want to get up earlier, you have to go to sleep earlier.
- Get up a little earlier every day. Now that you decided to become a morning person, it could be hard to get up, all of a sudden, two to three hours earlier. Setting your alarm clock 15 minutes earlier in the morning over a certain period of time can be easier on your body and also easier to stick to your new resolution.
- Implement a regular routine. Setting your alarm clock at the same hour every day, even on weekends, will help you stick to your new routine. Eventually, your internal clock will tell you when it’s time to wake up, even before your alarm starts buzzing. Moreover, going to bed at the same time each night will help you jump out of bed more easily.
- Keep your bedroom a distraction-free zone. Another point is to keep the TV, laptop or iPad out of the bedroom. Its first purpose is to sleep (mostly!!!) so your brain has to make the relation between sleep and the bedroom.
- Forget the snooze button. How many times did you set your alarm clock with the intention of getting up as soon as the alarm starts buzzing? Well, you’re not alone. At one point or another, we all did hit the snooze button one or twice before getting out of bed. But it seems that disrupting your REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle will make you feel groggy when you wake up, even if you got plenty of sleep.
- Eat a healthy breakfast. Coffee is great to help wake you up, but it isn’t enough to keep you going. Eating a good breakfast with all the works will help you get through your day. Whole grain carbs with protein are a good combination to give you all the energy you need.
- Try and exercise early. Exercising early in the morning will help keep your body awake by increasing your body temperature. This will boost your energy to the max so you can attack your work head-on throughout the day. It will also help you fall asleep at night.
