Near-sightedness (myopia) is a common vision condition in which an individual can see nearby objects clearly but objects farther away are blurry. It happens when the eye causes light rays to bend (refract) incorrectly and focus the images in front of the retina instead of on the retina. It develops gradually or rapidly and gets worsen during childhood and adolescence. This condition tends to run in families.

What Causes Myopia?

Myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea (the protective outer layer of your eye) is too curved and the light that enters in the eye won’t focus correctly. Images focus in front of the retina (which is the light-sensitive part of the eye), instead of directly on the retina. This causes blurred vision and in medical terms it is called a refractive error.

It can also be caused when the eyeball grows more and becomes very long front to back. It makes the individual hard to see things at a distance and also increases the chances of having other conditions like a detached retina, glaucoma, and cataract.

This condition usually begins in childhood and there is a higher risk if your parents are near-sighted. In most of the cases, myopia stabilizes in early adulthood but sometimes it continues to progress with age.

What are the symptoms of Myopia?

Symptoms of myopia vary from person to person and in most of the cases it usually starts around puberty and gets worsen over time until the eye is fully grown.

Some of the symptoms of myopia include:

  1. Eyestrain
  2. Headache due to eye strain
  3. Squinting or partially closing the eye to see properly
  4. Blurry vision when looking at distant objects, such as trouble in reading the blackboard at school or reading road signs.
  5. Symptoms may become severe when children are between the ages group of 8 to 12 years.
  6. Difficulty in driving a vehicle, especially at night (due to night myopia)
  7. A child with near-sightedness may include some symptoms:
  8. Persistently squint
  9. Pain in eyes when trying to see objects more than a few feet away
  10. Need to sit closer to the television, or the front of the classroom
  11. Seems to be unaware of distant objects
  12. Blink eyes excessively
  13. Rubbing his or her eyes frequently

If you think you or a loved one might have myopia, an eye test will determine if you are short-sighted, and you will be given a prescription for contact lenses or glasses to help correct your vision.
