How to Treat Epilepsy Through Ayurveda?

Epilepsy is a chronic disorder that affects the central nervous system in which causes an abnormality in brain activity and causes seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness.

The seizures may be related to a brain injury or a family tendency, but the main cause is completely unknown. The word “epilepsy” does not indicate anything about the cause of the person’s seizures or its severity.

Many people who are suffering from epilepsy have more than one type of seizure and may have other symptoms of neurological problems as well. It affects both males as well as females of all races, ethnic backgrounds, and ages.

As per Ayurveda’s point of view, it is termed “Apasmara”. It is classified into four types:

  1. Vataj Apasmara: This condition lasts for a short period which causes an increase in the respiratory rate. There is a secretion of foam from the mouth.
  2. Pitta Apasmara: In this type, there is a formation of tint on the body, due to excessive sweating patients feels hotness in the body.
  3. Kaphaj Apasmara: This apasmara lasts for a longer time and the foam is whitish with the heaviness in the body.
  4. Sannipatak Apasmara: This disease is caused due to the vitiation of the three doshas and has mixed symptoms.

What are the causes of epilepsy?

  • Epilepsy has no identifiable cause in about half of the population with this condition. In some of the cases, the condition may be traced to various factors, including:
  • Some types of epilepsy, which are categorized by the type of seizure or the part of the brain that is affected which is mostly run in families.
  • Some of the genes may make a person more sensitive to environmental conditions that trigger the chances of seizures.
  • Head trauma is also a result of a car accident or other traumatic injury that can cause epilepsy.
  • Various brain conditions that can cause damage to the brain, such as brain tumors or strokes can cause epilepsy. Stroke is the main cause of epilepsy in adults more than the age of 35.
  • Infectious diseases that can cause epilepsy are meningitis, AIDS and viral encephalitis.
  • Before birth, babies are sensitive to brain damage that could be the cause such as an infection in the mother, poor nutrition or oxygen deficiencies. This can result in epilepsy or cerebral palsy.
  • Epilepsy can also be associated with developmental disorders, such as autism and neurofibromatosis.

What are the symptoms of epilepsy?

Symptoms may vary and depends on the type of seizure. In most cases, a person who is suffering from epilepsy will tend to have the same type of seizure each time, hence the symptoms will become similar from episode to episode.

  • Epilepsy is caused due to the abnormal activity in the brain, seizures can affect any process with which the brain coordinates. Most of the signs and symptoms may include:
  • Temporary confusion
  • A staring spell
  • Uncontrollable jerking movements of the arms as well as legs
  • Loss of consciousness or awareness
  • Some of the Psychic symptoms such as fear or anxiety

What are the risk factors for epilepsy?

  • Certain factors may increase your risk of epilepsy includes:
  • The onset of epilepsy is most common in children as well as older adults, but this condition can occur at any age.
  • If you have a family history of epilepsy then you may be at an increased risk of developing epilepsy.
  • Head injuries are also responsible for some of the causes of epilepsy. It can be reduced by wearing a seat belt while riding in a car and by wearing a helmet while bicycling or riding a motorcycle.
  • Stroke and other blood vessels (vascular) diseases can lead to brain damage which may trigger the chances of epilepsy.
  • Dementia can also increase the chances of epilepsy in older adults.
  • Infections such as meningitis cause inflammation in your brain or spinal cord which increases the risk of epilepsy.
  • High fevers in children can sometimes be associated with the symptoms related to seizures. Children who have seizures due to high fevers generally have no chances to develop epilepsy. The risk of epilepsy will increase if a child has a long seizure.
