Posted on the 30 August 2020 by Nirmalkumar1997

While running an online shop using WordPress and WooCommerce, we might want to offer coupon codes for better conversion rates. Promoting your products with a coupon will help you to increase your profit for sure. Thankfully, WooCommerce is offering the coupon feature at its core.

In this article, we are going to show you how can you set the WooCommerce coupon rules with the Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin!

Advanced Coupons

By default, WooCommerce offers coupon features. But if you like to add some more features, you could consider using a coupon plugin like Advanced Coupons. Advanced Coupons is a freemium WordPress plugin that will help you to add additional coupon rules based on the user role, cart condition, URLs, scheduling, etc.

The Advanced Coupons Lite plugin is available on the WordPress plugins repository. If you check the product page, you could see that the plugin got 1000+ active installations within a short period.

With the free version plugin, you will be able to

  • Run BOGO deals.
  • Create coupon categories.
  • Restrict coupons by user role.
  • Apply coupon with custom URL.

Etc.

But if you get your hands on the premium version, you will be able to let the user apply coupons based on different conditions. However, with the free version plugin, you will be able to set a limited number of rules for coupons. On the other hand, with the premium version, every limitation got unlocked!

For this tutorial, we are going to use the free version plugin.

How To Configure WooCommerce Coupon Rules Using It?

The first thing you need to do is, log in to your WordPress admin area. After that, go to the Add New Plugins section and install the Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin.

After installation, activate it.

Now, you are ready to set custom rules for your coupons. If you don’t have any coupons on your shop, create one. WooCommerce coupons can be created in the Marketing section.

If you already got coupon codes, leave this part. When you create new coupons for your shop, all you need to do is, enter the code and a description for easy identification.

Right below that section, you will be able to see the Advanced Coupons plugin options.

We will be giving a 50% discount on all purchases using this coupon. So, configure the General Settings accordingly. The Add Products, Scheduler, One-Click Apply Notification, Shipping Overrides, etc are premium features. So, we won’t be able to configure those using the Lite version plugin.

Here in this article, we will be showing you how can you create a basic BOGO deal, restrict coupons for specific WordPress user roles, and how a user can apply coupons automatically by visiting custom URLs.

How To Create a BOGO Deal

BOGO stands for Buy One Get One. It’s a common tactic in the market that will help you to increase your sales. And with this Advanced Coupons WordPress plugin, we will be able to create a complete customized BOGO deal inside our WooCommerce shop.

Let me show you how.

It’s true that you will get some limitations in the BOGO deal customization there. It’s pretty simple than you think. In the coupons section, you will be able to see the customization options for BOGO.

There you will see two main configurations.

  • Trigger Type.
  • Apply Type.

In the free version, you can choose only specific products. If you are using the premium plan, you will be able to configure any combination of products or product categories. We have created two test products and added them to the BOGO section.

And as you can see in the above screenshot, we have chosen the discount as 100%. This means, when someone uses the coupon for purchasing the first product, they will get a 100% discount on the second products’ price. Once you have done that, save the changes.

And you are good to go. This is a great chance for you to offer combo packs and similar deals.

Restrict Coupons Based On Roles

The WordPress CMS will allow us to accept user registrations and everything with membership. If you are using a membership plugin for taking care of it or using the WooCommerce based user roles, you need to restrict the coupon usage according to roles some times.

As an example, let’s say that you are running a membership website with premium courses. Plus, you have divided the membership plans into two main ones. When the first plan offers basic courses, the other one can offer more advanced courses with limited-time coupons.

Well, in that case, you need to restrict the coupon usage according to the user’s role.

In this section, we will be showing you how you can do it.

In the plugin settings page, you won’t see so many customization options. All you see is, a message you can display when an invalid user tries to use the coupon.

We will be doing the whole customizations through the coupons settings page.

Under the General Settings, you would be able to see the Role Restriction option. Make sure that you have enabled it, choose who you need in and you are good to go.

We will be able to add multiple roles to the options.

If you need to add a unique error message for the coupon, you can edit the same from there. Or, the plugin will show the error message we have globally.

Once you are done, publish or update the coupon code. From now on, the coupon will only work for the ones you have chosen.

Apply Coupons Via Custom URLs

When you promote the deals and coupons through emails, probably we recommend adding a custom URL to the newsletter that will automatically give the user a discount. Normally, a user needs to visit the product page, add it to cart, apply coupon at the checkout.

Well, with a single URL, we will be able to apply the coupon. So we can skip the steps mentioned above, improve/ speed up the process.

Under the plugins’ settings, you could see a section for creating coupons.

Select it and you will see the customization options.

You don’t need to change the URL prefix in their settings. The default one – Coupon is good enough. Then, configure options like

  • Redirection URL after applying a coupon.
  • Redirection URL if the coupon is invalid or visited.
  • Success message.
  • Coupon applying failed message.
  • Field hiding.

Etc.

Once you have configured those, you are ready to create coupons for your customers. In the coupon creation page, you will see the URL settings.

By default, the plugin will modify the coupon URL according to the coupon code we have chosen. But, you will be able to modify it, make it a unique one. In our case, we have added SAVE50 as the coupon code. And our coupon URL will look like https:www.example.com/coupon/save50 without any other modification.

Well, if you need to add something else in the URL, use the URL override feature we have.

We have just published our coupon. So when someone visits that URL, the coupon will be applied automatically. Don’t forget to set the basic settings like discount type, amount, expiry, etc.

This is an awesome feature when you promote your limited-time offers via email marketing, SMS marketing, blog posts, or through social media. The good thing is, in fewer steps, the website visitors will be able to complete the purchase!

The premium plugin is offering so many unique features than the free one. Now, let’s take a look at their pricing and plans.
