Among the many changes introduced in iOS 14, Apple added one of the most requested features of all time - allowing users to set third-party apps as their default email and browser apps.
Since the launch of iOS 14, users can use Google Chrome as their default browser app. Now iPhone users can also set Gmail as the default email service, Google confirmed in a tweet.
Although Apple now allows third-party email and browser clients to be configured as default apps, app developers should still update their apps to support the feature. Therefore, iPhone users should get the latest version of Gmail app (6.0.200825) from App Store to remove it.
How do I set Gmail as my default email app?
- Download the latest version of the Gmail app.
- Access your iPhone / iPad settings (only available on iOS 14)
- Search for the Gmail app with the search bar
- Tap Gmail> Default email app> Gmail.
If you have deleted the iOS mail app, Gmail will automatically become your default email app after you download the latest version of the app.

Besides Gmail, iPhone users can also configure Outlook, Hey, or Spark as their default email service from now on.
Interestingly, there is a bug in iOS 14 that automatically resets Apple Mail and Safari as the default apps on restart. Apple has yet to resolve the issue, although it may be the process Apple intended.
