Tip for opening the lid of a jar that is too tight

Whether it’s jars of jams or pickles, the lid can resist and refuse to open. This leads to great frustration. Do not panic ! Here is a trick that makes it easy to open your jars.

  • Simply open your jar by hand

Although opening a jar by hand can be daunting, there is a technique that can turn this chore into child’s play. Take your jar, then press down on the lid (more on the edges of the lid) with the lower part of the palms of both hands crossed. Turn the pot a little then press again. Repeat the process, until you hear a small sound that indicates it’s open.

Another trick is to turn the jar upside down and tap the bottom several times with the palm of your open hand. This action is intended to increase the pressure in the jar and under the cap. Then just turn the jar upside down and try to open it again.

What other tricks to open a tight jar?

  • Add grip to your jar

Often, all it takes is improving your grip on the lid of your jar. A dry towel or plastic piece can be used for better adhesion. Place the item on your lid and twist as you normally would. In this way, the opening of the jar will be easier.

  • A small spoon to open your jar

If your jam jar refuses to give way despite your best efforts, take it to the next level. All you need is a spoon and slide it between the lid and the jar. Let some air in with a lever motion, then your jar will pop open once the pressure is released.

  • Use heat to loosen your jar

A heat stroke can help loosen the lid. This method consists of running the jar under hot water or dipping it, lid first, in a saucepan filled with hot water for 30 seconds to moisten the rubber. Otherwise, you can use a hair dryer. Consider using a dry tea towel to open your lid after applying heat.

If you often have trouble opening your jars, the best solution is to equip yourself with a mechanical or electric jar opener. In this way, you will be sure to open your recalcitrant jars quickly.

  • Make it easier to open your jar with a rubber band

You may not know it, but your jar can also be opened with a rubber band. Nothing complicated! Just wrap it around the edges of the jar, so that it holds the lid firmly. This will give you a better grip and provide more grip for your lid. Your hands will no longer slip and you will therefore be able to open your jar.
