STEP 1;

You need to have the bones, it can be left over from your previous meals or raw bones of either chicken, turkey or any other meat.

STEP 2;

Put the bones in a cooking pot and add enough water. The water to be added will depend on the bones being used. The water needs to slightly rise above the bones in that all the bones are covered. Put the pot on a cooker, you need a slow cooker since the pot contents need to boil for some time to make a nutritious broth.

STEP 3;

For the minerals in the bones to be fully extracted as naturally as possible, add apple cider vinegar or lemon juice. These should be about two tea spoons so that they don't make the broth bitter.

STEP 4;

Let the bones boil heat until all the meat residue drops from the bones, you can then get the meat and vegetables from the pot, or you can just let them boil together. After the meat has softened and fallen off the bones, reduce the cooker to low setting and let it cook for another eight hours if it is turkey or chicken bones or twenty hours for beef bones.

What to avoid when making bone broth for cats

  • Cats are a bit delicate as compared to dogs, so you need to be very careful when preparing this broth. First of all, you should strictly avoid adding a lot of seasoning in the broth without permission from the vet. Keep onions, garlic, chives and scallions away because they are toxic to cats.
  • Secondly, just to emphasize on the already mentioned fact that you need to ensure there are no bone pieces in the broth lest they choke the cat, you also need to be considerate of when serving the cat. Do not mix the broth with other solid cat foods if the cat is sick and weak because the cat will find liquid broth easier to take than when solid food is mixed in.
