How to Layer Jewelry & All About the Neckmess

By Styleofsam @styleofsam

Accessories are my secret weapon for style. You can completely change a look with your accessories and jewely. Trends are always changing but one that I LOVE is layering pieces. Today, I'm chatting all about how to layer your jewelry whether it's rings on every finger, an arm party, or a "neckmess"!

AND I've been stopped multiple times and asked about it so I thought it would be fun to share what I wear!

(SUSTAINABLE) STYLE Rx:You found a gorgeous piece of jewelry that makes you go WOW, but the price makes you go OW!! Look into pre-owned option like on The Real Real. That's where I purchased my Spinelli Kilcollin ring!

First, let me start by saying that you can accomplish this look with any kind of jewelry. Currently, I'm wearing all "real jewelry" which I have acquired over some time. However, the same look can be done with costume jewelry. One of my favorite places for costume jewelry was Forever 21 before I owned real pieces, and I'll share a "look for less" in each section.

THE NECKMESS

The term "neckmess" is trending and who doesn't love to wear mess of necklaces. I'm a fan of more is more and why not wear everything?! LOL! Okay, in all seriousness, there is a little method to the madness. I'll break down some basics and show you examples on myself.

  • Show off your gorgeous pieces by layering different lengths - from choker to pendant. I usually have on at least 3 necklaces everyday. Two of them are never taken off.
  • Matching NOT required! It's okay if you mix metals (like gold and silver) or mix materials (like pearls).
  • What about neckline? What ABOUT necklines! There are no rules. It's usually shown off best with a v-neckline but I've worn my necklace layers with a t-shirt, square neck, and everything else. It's just that certain necklaces will show and others may not.

Many of my necklaces have sentimental value and significant meaning to me. My MIL gave me her Mary medallion and it never comes off. I met Marla Aaron at Ylang 23 and fell IN LOVE with all of her pieces. My first was the square link chain with the silver and gold heart lock which is engraved with my family's names. My husband knew that I was saving for more pieces, so he and Little M got the star lock for a Mother's Day present. It literally makes me tear up when I see the picture of him giving it to me (see below). The Van Cleef & Arpels Alhambra necklace was a gift when Baby M was born and will be a family heirloom passed down to her when she gets older.

RINGS AND THINGS

My cousin wore a ring on almost every single finger, and I thought she was THE COOLEST girl in the world. I definitely copied her back in the 90s, and I LOVE wearing rings! Even if my nails aren't done (which they basically NEVER are), my fingers look pretty and decorated with some bling! And NOW, it's also trending!! Here we go with some quick tips:

  • Wear a similar thickness across the fingers! You can wear dainty with dainy and chunky with chunky for maximal impact!
  • Rules are meant to be broken! You can also mix and match!

My rings also have significant meaning to me! The AU RATE pearl & diamond ring is a recent purchase, and it symbolizes my two children with the pearl and the diamond bar. They both have such a different adoption story but very beautiful together. I've been obsessed with the brand for years after discovering them at TenOverSix in Dallas and purchasing rings for my best friends. (I found them on a special, but there wasn't enough to buy one for myself!) AU RATE is like the Everlane of jewelry - responsibly sourced and made in NY. For every purchase, there is a book given to a child in need.

I purchased the Spinelli Kilcollin ring because it's a mix of metals and materials (yellow gold, rose gold, and diamonds) - all precious and different like my blended family sometimes separate but always connected by bond. The LAGOS North Star ring is a reminder to choose the right thing. (You can read more i n this post.) And the last ring was given to me by my late father so I treasure it.

THE ARM PARTY

I LIVED for the arm party pre-kids but now it's a bit toned down. Wearing tons of bracelets usually hurt ME and my baby when I was carrying them so I stopped wearing bracelets unless I was out for date night. And then I found the All Weather Bangles from Budha Girl and those are A.MAZ.ING!!! They are so light-weight, pain-free, waterproof, and life proof! Wish I would have known about these years ago! Anyhow, I digress!

Do you wear a neckmess, arm party, or rings and things? What's your favorite? (They are ALL my favorite! LOL! I'm a more is MORE girl!)
There are literally NO rules!! Wear multiples for maximal effect! You can even tie a scarf around your wrist for a super fun beautiful look!

Basically, my daily arm party consists of All Weather Bangles on my right arm, and a LOVE bracelet and watch on my left arm. When it's a date night or special occasion, then I wear my faves like Julie Vos, Chanel, or Hermes on the right arm.
