What is Ulcerative colitis?

Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory disease of the Large intestine (colon) which is characterized by inflammation, irritation, and formation of tiny ulcers in the lining of the colon.

Types of Ulcerative colitis

It can be of 4 types

1. Pan Ulcerative colitis

Type in which the whole colon or large intestine is involved. Symptoms include - Loose stools, severe pain in the abdomen and extensive weight loss. It can lead to various severe complications.

2. Ulcerative Procititis

It affects the small area of the Rectum and is associated with fewer complications.

3. Left sided colitis

Descending colon mainly involved. Symptoms include - Bleeding, loose stools, severe pain in the left side of the abdomen, loss of appetite and weight loss.

4. Proctosigmiditis

This type mainly affects the Recto sigmoid colon. Symptoms include - Bleeding, urge to pass stool and abdominal cramping.

Causes for Ulcerative Colitis

The exact cause of the disease is not known but some causes are mentioned below

Signs and symptoms of Ulcerative colitis

It can present with following signs and symptoms

  • Rectal bleeding
  • Stool with mucous and blood
  • Pain in the abdomen
  • Abdominal cramping
  • Sharp rectal pain
  • Urge to pass stool
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
  • Tiredness
  • Dehydration

Diagnosis of Ulcerative colitis

Ulcerative colitis can be diagnosed by following diagnostic methods

  1. Complete blood count (anemia, platelet count)
  2. Liver function test (primary sclerosing cholangitis)
  3. Renal function test (pre-renal failure)
  4. Electrolytes studies (hypokalemia, hypomagnesium)
  5. C-reactive protein can be measured (to find the elevation, another indication of inflammation)
  6. Sigmoidoscopy

Ayurvedic perspective of Ulcerative colitis

According to Ayurveda, there are three Doshas- Vata, Pitta and Kapha, when the imbalance occurs between any of them, the disease takes place. Ulcerative colitis is a disease of Pitta and Vata doshas. Vata doshas in the colon results in aggravation of Pitta and kapha doshas. Excessive consumption of Pitta aahar affects the Rakhta(blood) and Mamsadhatu (Fatty tissues), resulting in inflammation, edema and mucous accumulation.

An Ancient verse about Dhania (Coriandersativum)

It is as follows

Meaning - Various synonyms and properties of Dhania have been explained in this verse.

Synonyms - Dhana, dhanyak, dhenukadhanyaka, dhanak, dhanya, vitunnaka, kunti,chhtra and Kusutumbru.

Properties - Dhania is bitter, astringent, light, unctuous and pungent in taste with hot in potency. Fresh dhania is sweet in taste and pacifies pitta doshas only. It pacifies excessive thirst, burning sensation in the body and all three doshas. It is very helpful in controlling cough, thinness and respiratory diseases. It helps in promoting digestive fire and is used to manage all kinds of fever.

Dosage - 1 teaspoonful twice daily with plain water after meal

Boil 1 teaspoonful powder in 400 ml of water. Keep it boiling until it remains 50 ml. Strain it,leave the residue and drink the water. Use it twice daily. Make fresh preparation every time.

2. Arjuna capsules

These capsules are prepared by using standardized extract of Arjuna (TerminalisArjuna). Arjunaacts as anti-oxidant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, rich in minerals like calcium, copper, magnesium and zinc, helps in the proper functioning of the heart, reduces cholesterol level, helpful in controlling high blood pressure. Arjuna is a good astringent, expectorant, helps to control bleeding, helps in maintaining heart health and balance the three energies of the body.

Dosage - 2 capsules twice daily with plain water after meals

3. Pitta balance

Its composition includes - PravalPishti, JaharmohraPisti, kamdhandhuRas, AkikPishti, MuktiPisti, etc. These calcium compounds help in controlling bleeding, provides a cooling effect on the body, help to balance the pitta dosha in the body.

4. Kutajghanvati

It is prepared by using the pure extract of khutaz (Holarrhenaantidysentrica) herb. It is very useful in the functioning of the intestine and also helps in curing Diarrhea and Dysentery.

Dosage - 2 tablets twice daily with plain water after meals

5. Vasaka capsules

These capsules are prepared by using the pure extract of herb Adhatodavasica.

Dosage - 1 capsule twice daily with plain water after meals

6. Coolstrin-B capsules

These capsules are prepared by using herbs like

  • Lodhra (Symplocosracemoss)
  • Nagkesar (Mesuafera)
