With summer (hopefully) nearly upon us, many of you might be considering giving your home a little bit of a makeover to get the most out of the nicer weather. You could write endless blog posts on giving the whole house a makeover, so here’s one on making your living room feel that little more summery…
Say it with flowers
Flowers are a fantastic way of making your living room feel summery, so get a couple of bunches to dot around the room. There are a huge number of lovely looking plants and flowers you could choose, but just a few include hibiscus, amaryllis, orchids and peace lilies. Click here for some more flowers and flowering houseplants that will give your living room a real sense of summer, both in terms of looks and smell.
Brighten up your accessories
Take a look around your living room and take note of the soft furnishings and accessories you have dotted around the room. Do they look a little drab or are dark in colour? If so then you might need to spruce up your home furnishings and accessories and trade them in for something a little brighter and more summery. Bright colours such as yellows and oranges will really enhance the room, although pastels will also do the job well. For example, Montgomery have some really nice curtain fabric that would really brighten the place up. Pinterest also has plenty of excellent ideas on how to do accessorise for the summer.
Make use of your windows
Getting natural light into a room is a great way of bringing summer indoors, so it’s important you make use of any windows or patio doors you have in your living room. Whilst bright curtains can give the décor a boost, try leaving them open as much as possible to let the light in. You could always try opening the windows or patio doors themselves if the weather’s nice enough. If it just so happens that someone’s been cutting the grass outside then it’ll feel (and smell) even more like summer.
De-clutter
Summer is all about wide open space, so if your room is cluttered and messy then it takes away from the ideal ambience. Try and clear out as much of the clutter as possible and the room will feel a lot bigger and brighter, especially if you open a couple of windows too. A more minimalist feel to the room, if the décor is right, will really open the room up and let the summer in.
Use reflective materials
As we’ve mentioned, having more natural light in the room will obviously brighten the place up and a great way of doing that is by using reflective materials in the room. Mirrors are naturally an easy way of doing this if you don’t already have one, although probably just the one mirror will suffice or it will look a little odd. You could also try using light coloured woods, such as pine, for furniture and accessories, which will reflect light much better than darker woods. If you really want to go the extra mile, then wooden flooring may also be an option, again using a lighter coloured wood.
