Want A Sexy Waistline T
Hula hoops are making a comeback, this time as a great way to shape up and lose weight. Now mostly sold in weighted versions,5,8,10lbs. Hula Hoop will help you burn as many calories in an hour as you would running on a treadmill. And the workout looks kinda sexy while doing it.
Unlike its featherweight '50s cousin the Hula Hoop, the Heavy Hoop is a 3-lb steel ring encased in foam, and it packs a mean workout. A 140-lb woman who spins a Heavy Hoop for 10 minutes burns 120 calories, about the same as an eight-minute-mile run. To keep the hoop spinning, you use all your major muscles, including those in your core that support your back and keep your stomach flat. An added benefit: The flowing movements don't jar your joints. The initial appeal of hooping is that it's fun, but its lasting value is that it works. An hour of intense hooping can burn as many calories as an hour-long run on a treadmill. Exercisers can get a full-body workout with moves like HoopGirl's "pulse," which stimulates the entire core; the "limbo," which targets the back and thighs; and the "Wild West," which helps tone biceps and triceps. "Anything that gets people off the couch and burning calories is a good thing," says Pete McCall, an exercise physiologist for the American Council on Exercise. "Hooping can be a good way to mix up your routine and keep it from being boring."
You don't have to be rhythmically gifted to succeed either
"In a 60-minute class, you maneuver more than 2 tons of weight," says Wendy Iverson, a veteran fitness instructor who invented the Heavy Hoop. "You're getting cardio and strength training at the same time." To learn about home workout videos and health clubs that offer Heavy Hoop classes, visit www.hoopgirl.com
