How to Find the Perfect Gift

I've been home home for about 36 hours thus far. In that time, more than one friend has asked, "how does it feel to be home?" Ironically, I have to say that it doesn't feel odd at all. I haven't seen most of my family in four months and the last time I was in New York it was summertime... and yet my arrival was anticlimactic. I had a quiet dinner with my favorite five people, went to bed early, and yesterday, unpacked my suitcase and wrapped their Christmas presents. What I am excited for is for them to open them soon. Giving gifts is one of my favorite things about this holiday season... and apparently I'm sometimes good at it. "What should I get for [insert name here]?" is the second most frequently asked question I've received lately. Honestly, I don't think there's just one perfect gift for anyone. But I do know there are those special somethings that particular people seem to appreciate most. If you've got some last-minute shopping to do without a clue as to what you're looking for, here are some things to keep in mind...
First, what would this person never buy for themselves? My mom loves decorating our tree, and each year, has my siblings and I put up the ornaments that have been given to us throughout the years. There's even one or two for my dad. After this Christmas holiday, she'll have a glass-blown, hand-painted ornament from Prague to put up herself. Second, what is this person passionate about? My dad enjoys beverage-tasting with friends at parties. For him, I picked up a Czech honey liquor that can be served hot/cold. I think it'll be a great post-Christmas dinner drink. Third, what is a favorite thing that you two always do together? If you love to go hiking, or cook, or watch movies together, consider something that'll amp up the experience. Speaking of the experience, why not simply give one? Your loved one undoubtedly appreciates spending time with you most so creating another reason for you two to do so is the best kind of gift, in my opinion.
