How To Design Your Bedroom For a Great Night’s Sleep

By Sharon Dalzell @Dalzells_Beds

When thinking about refreshing our bedroom decor or going for a completely new look, did you know that there’s more to designing the space than just choosing bedding and paint?

Our sleep environment is an integral part of establishing good sleep hygiene. And by that, we mean everything from the color scheme, temperature and scents to the bed we sleep in should be carefully considered.

We spend a third of our lives sleeping, so our bedrooms must be a place of relaxation. Read on to find out more about the importance of design in your room decor.

What is the Best Colour for a Bedroom?

Colour plays an integral part in our bedroom decor. Colours that imbue warmth and tranquillity will be more welcoming. Although your bedroom wall color will not directly affect your sleep, it will impact your mood.

Soft lavenders, blue-greys, dusty pinks and earthy greens will create that Zen-like space of our dreams. Or for a more Scandi, minimalist feel, neutral shades of beige and warm whites will bring calming influences to bear.

Vibrant reds, oranges and brash colours will be less appealing and are best used in a different space. Of course, like everything, it comes down to personal taste. And if your preference is for a canary yellow bedroom and you like it, then that’s the color for you.

Just as important as color is the smell of our bedrooms.

The Best Fragrance for Bedrooms

Various studies have shown that the smell of our bedroom can influence sleep. Lavender, vanilla and jasmine are familiar scents to many as they have been adorning our homes one way or another over the years.

Even scents such as chamomile, often associated as a calming nighttime drink, when infused with lavender and vanilla can bring a tranquil and calming influence to our rooms.

It’s important though that we don’t add fragrance to our bedrooms through the use of candles. Much safer options are available, such as reed diffusers or plug-ins. But as with all aromatherapy or scented products, it’s best to check the instructions for use and any allergy advice.

Creating The Perfect Bedroom Environment

Our bedrooms are somewhere we retreat to at night to rest and calm our minds after a hard day’s work. It’s our haven and a place to unwind and relax.

Styling our rooms is very much a reflection of our individuality, and we should surround ourselves with items that reflect our personality and with things that bring us joy.

Our choice of bed from a traditional divan set to a luxuriously upholstered bed frame speaks as much about our design choices as it does about our personal support preferences.

The lighting in our bedroom is essential too. Known to suppress melatonin, artificial light, in particular, is to blame for interfering with our natural circadian rhythms. It not only keeps us awake, but it can also make us feel less sleepy.

Adding some mood lighting might just be the thing to creating a peaceful and calming space without it interfering with our sleep.

The temperature of our rooms too can affect our sleep. Too warm, and it makes us restless. Too cold, and it could make it difficult to fall asleep or disrupt our slumber during the night.

Whatever way we design our bedrooms, choosing the right bed needs to be part of the plan. Sleeping on an uncomfortable bed could cause us to lose at least an hour’s sleep at night. Our handy bed buyers guide on what to look for when buying a new bed is the best place to start.
