How to Cure Back Pain Through Ayurveda?

Most of the people have back pain at least once in their lifetime.

Back pain is the most common reason for absence from work and for seeking medical treatment. It can be uncomfortable and debilitating.

Back pain affects people of any age, for various reasons. As the age increases, the chance of developing lower back pain increases which is due to various causes such as previous occupation and degenerative disk disease.

Lower back pain is commonly linked to the lumbar spine, discs in between the vertebrae of the spine, ligaments around the spine, spinal cord and nerves, muscles of the lower back, abdominal and pelvic internal organs, and the skin around the lumbar region.

Problems with the spine-related condition like osteoporosis can lead to back pain.

The human spine consists of a complex structure of muscles, ligaments, tendons, disks, and bones, which works together and provides support to the body. The spine segments are cushioned with cartilage-like pads which are called as discs.

In case of any problem with these components, it can lead to back pain. In some of the cases, its main cause remains unclear. Other causes are- strain, medical conditions, and poor posture, also.


What are the causes of back pain?

Back pain that comes suddenly but lasts not for more than five or six weeks (acute) and this can be caused by a fall or heavy lifting. Chronic pain lasts for more than three months but it is less common than acute pain.

Some conditions that are commonly linked to back pain include:

Muscle or ligament strain: This occurs due to repeated heavy lifting or a sudden awkward movement that strains back muscles as well as spinal ligaments.

Bulging or ruptured disks: Disks act as cushions between the spinal vertebrae. These discs can bulge or rupture and press on a nerve. Sometimes there will be bulging or ruptured disk without back pain.

Arthritis: Osteoarthritis affects the lower back which leads to a narrowing of the space around the spinal cord and this condition is called spinal stenosis.

Skeletal irregularities: A condition in which your spine curves can lead to back pain, but generally not until middle age.

Osteoporosis: In this condition, your bones become porous and brittle that can develop compression fractures.

Strain or injury:

Back pain commonly stems from strain or injury. Most of the frequent causes of back pain are- muscle spasm, muscle tension, damaged disks,

Activities that can lead to strains or spasms include:

lifting too heavy objects, abrupt and awkward movements, body structure related problems, etc.

Sciatica: Sharp pain that travels through the buttock and down the back of the leg which is caused due to a bulging or herniated disk pressing on a nerve.

What are the symptoms of back pain?

The main symptom of back pain is pain anywhere in the back region and sometimes it radiates towards the buttocks and legs. Some back issues can cause pain in other parts of the body and it depends on the nerves that are affected.

Other symptoms of back pain can include:

  1. Muscle pain
  2. Shooting or stabbing pain in the affected area
  3. Pain that radiates down your leg
  4. Pain that worsens standing, walking or lifting heavy objects
  5. Pain that improves with reclining


What are the risk factors for back pain?

Some of the risk factors that develop back pain:

Age: Back pain is a more common problem as the age increases, it usually starts around the age group of 30 or 40.

Lack of exercise: Weak muscles and lack of exercise might lead to back pain.

Excessive weight gain: Excessive body weight puts extra stress on your back.

Disease: Some diseases like arthritis and cancer can lead to back pain.

Psychological conditions: People who are suffering from depression and anxiety are prone to back pain.

Smoking: It reduces blood flow to the spine and unable to deliver nutrients to the back. It slows down the healing process.


What is the Ayurvedic Treatment for BackPain?

Panchakarma Treatment:

It comprises of herbal ingredients like Kali Mirch (Piper nigrum), Ghritkumari (Aloe barbadensis), shudhashilajit, shudhakuchala, Giloysatav (Tinosporacordifolia), shudhavatsnabh, etc. It shows effective results in lower backache, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, increases appetite, etc.

Recommended Dosage – Take 1 tablet twice daily with normal water.

3. PanchasakarChurna:

Panchsakar Churna is a classical Ayurvedic formulation that consists of five ingredients named as – Balaharitaki – (Unripe fruits of Terminalia chebula), Shunti – (Zingiberofficinale), Shatapushpa – (Anethumsowa), Swarnapatri – (Cassia angustifolia), SaindhavanLavana – (Rock Salt). Recommended Dosage – Take 1 teaspoonful with Luke warm water at bedtime.
